Who are the founders of Yahoo?
Nowadays,
the number of people who access the World Wide Web continues
to increase rapidly. There are many new websites which are exploding
in the Internet world every day. One of the most famous websites
which provide various services is Yahoo. However, how many people
know who the founders of this site are ?
Yahoo
was founded by David Filo and Jerry Yang in April 1994. David
Filo is American. He finished Bachelor's Degree in Computer
Engineeringat at Tulane University in 1988 and continued studying
for a Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering at Stanford
University. Jerry Yang is Taiwanese. However, he and his family
moved to the United States when he was only ten year old. He
was raised and grew up in San Jose, California. In 1990, he
entered Stanford University and could finish both Bachelor's
and Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering within only four
years 1.
Yahoo
stands for "yet another hierarchical officious oracle". It initially
started in Filo's and Yang's campus trailer. At that time, it
was called "Jerry and David's guide to the World Wide Web".
Both of them decided to build this website on the Internet just
as a personal interest. During the initial time, only the two
founders and a few other students at Stanford University used
it. About few months later, people from the surrounding area
and universities began using it. As a result of the number of
visitors, which increased rapidly, David and Jerry realized
that it was not suitable to use the university's resources.
Therefore, they decided to move Yahoo to Netscape facilities
in early 1995 and established the company in March of the same
year. Today Yahoo has its headquarters in Sunnyvale, California
and has offices in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Australia, Canada
and the United States 2.
Yahoo
is like other businesses, which need revenue and profits. Yahoo's
main profit comes from advertising such as premium listings.
"Yahoo served 3,795 advertisers during the fourth quarter of
2001 including more than 1,842 clients outside the United States"
1 . Yahoo, in addition, can also make money through
other business such as extra mail storage, Yahoo Hosting, Yahoo
Auctions including Yahoo stores. Yahoo today is growing rapidly
as chief executive officer Terry Semel said "3.5 million users
now pay for Yahoo services, making it the most rapidly growing
group within Yahoo. The total global audience reached by Yahoo
in 2002 is 236 million users-up from 196 million a year ago"
